Having just read the newsletter I see we lose the field to MANZ on a long weekend. It was only just discussed by the committee about the use and restriction of Saturdays and yet we give it to some SIG who not only use a restrictive saturday but also an extra days flying on a public holiday. Quoted from the latest newsletter "A reminder to members: our resource consent only allows for 12 flying Saturdays during the year so we must reserve Saturdays for test flying and training. A reminder that the offical club day is Sunday" What are the rules about flying on this MANZ weekend?? While not a member of MANZ, a few of us have aircraft that fit the MANZ criteria of 2m wing span or 1/4 scale replicas( extras, cubs etc) Are we allowed to fly? What about the other members with there .40 sunday fliers or should that be sunday/public holiday flyers? Woodville, Ashurst, Bulls anyone? Your thoughts....... Your thoughts....

I was a little confused on that. I've looked through the club rules etc on the website. What does the saturday thing in the last newsletter mean exactly? When are these "12 saturdays" when flying is allowed? Is it posted somewhere which saturdays these are?

Hi Kelvin As i sit down to enjoy a beer after work, i feel sorry you feel this way, and has a MANZ member and the "co-ordinator" i feel that i should reply. So let me start with a little bit of history, The MANZ organisation was started 1982 by the following people, Russ Johnson, Royce Johnson, Chuck Holder, Kevin Uncle, Wayne Cartwright and Ron Cavanagh . At this point in time these people all belonged to Palmerston North Aeroneers. Their goal: MANZ was established in 1982 as a Chapter of the IMAA organization which was based in the USA. At the time, the world’s IMAA was the leading organization for large model enthusiasts. It had three main principles. One was that flying should be at low-key friendly rallies with no competitive element and a maximum of cooperation and fun. Another principle was that large model flying must be safe. The third principle was that the criteria for being ‘large’ were based on dimensions – essentially the same ones that MANZ still uses today. Like the Nationals, IMAC etc, MANZ travels around the country during the year to various clubs and enjoy a weekends flying at some pretty special sites. So every second year the MANZ committee approach PNA and ask if its ok to have the use of our strip for the weekend. This in itself i feel is great, and the club should feel proud as something that was originated by PNA some 28 years ago comes to is back home roots all be it for one weekend in 24 months. Whilst this is being held on Queens B'day weekend, MANZ will only be there on Saturday and Sunday, Monday is the clubs. PNA are holding their open day on a Saturday and Sunday as a fundraising exercise, i here no complaints over this. MANZ too is a fundraising exercise and the $10.00 landing fee that each member pays to fly that weekend goes straight into PNA's pockect, any sausage sizzle that is run goes to PNA, 10 pilots x $10.00 = $100.00, Easy money wouldn't you say?? If have MANZ suitable aircraft you are more than welcome to join in, if you don't i am sure that with some dicussion and consideration you may be able to fly. As after all we are all in the hobby to enjoy it, so why not come out for the group meal on the Satureday night and get to know new people. If my memory serves me i have seen you at the previous two MANZ rallies, one of which was held on Queens B'day weekend!! And i'm sure you would agree that there are some impressive aircraft that turn up to this event that are worth seeing. Whilst our resource consent restricts us to 12 saturdays a year, the club hasn't stipulated which 12 saturdays, and has been fairly relaxed on this, however we have noitced that saurdays have become very popular and all we are trying to do is not limit it to 12 saturdays but just to limit the over use of saturdays so we don't get on the wrong side of the neighbours, just like we restricted the number of weekday flying. I hope this clears up valid your concern. I recived the Pics from Kapiti, they look good, will get onto an article for next chatter

Thanks for the history lesson. I have absolutely no problems with MANZ doing what they do, thanks for the update where we can fly on a monday. "PNA are holding their open day on a Saturday and Sunday as a fundraising exercise, i here no complaints over this" Is it because we can all fly Having attended a few different comps around the counrty myself now, we tend to chip in $20 for the local club. 10 pilots x $20= $200 better still. At the last Rumble $1000 was donated to HBRFC. Now thats a donation when you lose the field for the weekend. Let alone 3 days. We struggle at a club level just to get some free air to do aerobatics, let alone ask for a sunday, dear god the world would rain down cats and dogs at the mention of it. Just my 2c worth.

I will be away that weekend as such so it will not affect me, however as a new ish member, I can see the loss of any days flying on a field that is already seeing restrictions on days to fly, for its members, is one which may well raise eyes , despite the obvious history of our relationship with MANZ. Perhaps a general canvas of the members may be in order in the future as situiations change with field member numbers and pressure on the space to fly are considerations. I see both your points , however I prefer to fly rather than watch someone else do it. No disrespect to MANZ intended at all.

The purpose of a club is to foster the activity in question. To this end, inviting out of town fliers, this time with a specialist interest, satisfies that goal. It should be noted that a number og PNA members also belong to MANZ. This rally is a "regional" rally in MANZ parlance and is run by local members of MANZ, who have the discretion to invite club members to join in. I have no doubt that this will be done, with a preference probably given to MANZ size models, so you won't necessarily be banned from "Your own" flying field. I have been a member of this club for over 20 years and a member of MANZ for most of that time. This specialist activity, as well as Pylon racing, Aerobatics, Gliders and all competitive flying provide encouragement for all fliers; I think the whining about air time should stop.

But you may have to pay $10 to fly at your own field.
